In 1856 Teatro La Fenice in Venice ordered a new opera by Verdi. The composer had decided to set to music the theme with the historic-political background by the original dramatic piece by
F. Schiller Die Verschwörung des Fiesko zu Genua. The story of the opera takes place in the second half of the 14th.century in Genoa, against a background of the conflict of the two rival sides – followers of the pope and imperator Guelfs and Ghibellins. There is also the misunderstanding between Plebians and Patricians and a confrontation between Genoa and Venice. Simon Boccanegra, who liberated Genoa from pirates, is in the middle of all these confrontations like a human and liberal governor, who wants to achieve a universal good. The premiere of the opera on March 1857 didn’t meet with the spectators’ success. The opera became popular only after the adaptation and the second premiere in the Milan’s La Scala in 1881.
