Orchester and choir of State opera.
The chorus opera was composed by Verdi based on the Biblical story of the captivity of Hebrews in Babylon. The historical events are used as background for a romantic and political plot. The piece continues in great tradition of the Italian opera from the first half of 19th. Century. The prayer of captured Hebrews “Va pensiero sull´ali dorate…” has become a secret national anthem of Italians. In spite of the fact, that the contemporary political subtext of the opera is not urgent any more, the risk of the domination of the weaker nations and the necessity of the protection of national identity are always current.
