This opera buffa was first time performed at Burgtheater in Vienna on January 26, 1790 and still holds its leading position among the twenty most performed operas. The story takes place in Naples. Da Ponte used a favorite plot concerning the change of engaged couple, which is already well-known from the thirteen Century. Two young men would like to check the fidelity of their fiancées so they decide to change their looks. It does not take a long time and their girlfriends fall in love with their “new” lovers. Young men just reveal the bitter truth - all women are like that.
